Recapping VSI Labs’ Automated Drive West & East

December 11, 2019 – In the fall of 2019, VSI Labs embarked on two unprecedented cross-country journeys in its research vehicle. Both drives provided VSI with the opportunity to test various autonomous-vehicle applications developed by its engineering team. Testing self-driving cars these days is common, but VSI Labs needed to test various autonomous-vehicle (AV) applications. So, the company took its research vehicle (Fig. 1) on two unprecedented cross-country journeys.

September 21, 2019 – Fresh off their Automated Drive West, the team from Minnesota-based VSI Labs will now head in the opposite direction. The Automated Drive East will cover approximately 1,000 miles between their Minneapolis office and Washington D.C. Similar to their trip west, VSI will be testing state-of-the-art autonomous vehicle technology.

Managing Autonomy: Regulators seek to promote the av industry, boost safety, protect spectrum

August 25, 2019 – Automotive industry regulators, in the United States in particular, are seeking to remove regulatory restrictions on the development and testing of autonomous vehicles without compromising job No. 1 — safety. “There is widespread recognition that automated vehicles will coexist with conventional vehicles and at some point operate side-by-side with them on the highways,” said Nicole Nason, administrator of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), one of several government speakers at the Automated Vehicles Symposium held in Orlando in July.

VSI Labs’ Automated Drive West Project: Preparing for a Cross-Country Road Trip with Autonomous Vehicle

July 30, 2019 – This August, autonomous vehicle (AV) research firm VSI Labs is embarking on the classic American cross-country road trip–with a twist. VSI will utilize their autonomous research vehicle for the 2,000-mile journey, driving from Minneapolis, MN, to Santa Clara, CA, where the Drive World conference will be held from August 27 to 29.  The vehicle is a 2018 Ford Fusion equipped with Dataspeed’s by-wire control system, along with numerous other AV technologies. VSI engineers built a Linux-based computer installed inside the vehicle which acts as a domain controller for AV functions.

April 7, 2019 – Two cars, a Lincoln MKZ and Chrysler Pacifica, provided by Rochester Hills-based Dataspeed Inc., were available for participants. The demonstration was mostly autonomous, but there were two teleop (remote operation) portions, in which a backseat passenger — equipped with monitors and a steering system of their own — could take control of the car.

April 5, 2019 – Mona Ramouni is excited for these vehicles, mostly because it will give her some independence. She is visually impaired and cannot see or drive, and has to wait for Ubers or someone in her life to drive her and her daughters to places. Having taken a ride in the vehicles, she said they felt safe and she’s excited to be able to use one soon. “The turns, the braking, it all felt natural. I thought it was going to be more nervous than I was,” said Ramouni.
